IBTE Agro-Biz Rice Project at Kg Wasan

​

The First Harvest (Feb 2020)

Since the first planting in Nov 2019, the 10-ha farms, which have since expanded to 15-ha, recorded a yield of 8.5 metric tonnes (MT) of paddy per hectare, one of the highest in the country by the first batch of 10 Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) students farming rice under the LiveWIRE AgroBiz Padi Agropreneur Project (AgroBiz) in Feb 2020.

The IBTE project is one of 7 activities that are included in the proposal “Towards Rice Sufficiency In Brunei Darussalam” presented to Maimunah Holdings. The other activities and areas are

​​

  1. Seeds multiplication ~ Multiplication Line A & B are ready for harvest, which will be moved to the bigger Batong areas

  2. Kg Batong (Tender for the hybrid) ~ 38-ha site for development and supply of F1 hybrid rice seeds to the nation.  

  3. Kg Junjungan (LNS-owned areas and the adjacent farms) ~ with the successful experience in the IBTE project, this will be replicated once the funds are in.   

  4. Limbang District, Sarawak ~ LNS has spoken to the stakeholders in the District, who are keen to collaborate and will support the connecting pipe from the Limbang river to the nearest borderline in Junjungan. Some available paddy areas at the nearby Limbang areas will be developed.

  5. Kg Kandol – this project has been endorsed by DAA to help increase the nation’s rice self-sufficiency, through the production of Titih seeds. At the ground level, however, the authorities are facing very tough, physical challenges to move this project. DAA has requested LNS to provide advisory and related services to ride through the challenges.

Based on the IBTE experience there are several improvement which can be applied moving forward:

 

  1. Use of 100% organics.

  2. Use of technology such as drone, which helps increase the productivity level (10-minutes spraying compared to 2 day manually).  

  3. Excellent technical support from the expert (namely Malaysia). The meeting also touch on the possibility of collaborating with Osaka University to apply the AI technology into the rice production related activities.

  4. Improved water level using microbes.

  5. Generate extra revenue for cultivation of crops include papaya, pineapple. LNS has been asked to look into producing the juice of these fruits

The Second Harvest (Sept 2020)

 

The second harvest for the AgroBiz project has increased from 8.5 metric tonne (MT) per hectare in the first harvest to 9.6MT per hectare. The few factors contributed to the high-yield output includes natural measures, planting insect-repellent flowers from attacking the crops as well as the use of organic fertiliser and microbes to improve soil fertility.
